If You Know, You Know: Mírate
The Los Feliz door you'd walk right past, and the tree-filled Mexican oasis hiding behind it.

We were only in Los Angeles for an errand. A wedding to-do had us over in Los Feliz to drop something off, and the plan afterward was simple: lunch at Bacari. But the clock beat us. There was no way to make it before the lunch window closed, so we did what you do, pulled up a list of nearby spots, and started scanning. One name kept tugging at us. It sat just off our route, so we followed it.
What we found is the reason this post exists.
The door that tells you nothing

From the street there's a big, obvious restaurant, and then, almost beside it, a sliver of a doorway with a small sign. You'd walk past it a hundred times. But you step through, up a staircase, and the city drops away. Suddenly you're somewhere else entirely: a hushed bar to greet you, a little jewel-box seating nook, and then it opens up into an airy patio, and beyond a railing, a whole other world downstairs, built around a real tree growing straight up through the middle of the room. Warm, Spanish, a little bit Tulum. We later learned the space runs about 7,500 square feet across multiple levels: a quieter agave bar up top, a livelier bar below, and a mezzanine deck whose roof opens to the sky. Standing at that rail with our jaws somewhere near the floor, we finally understood the name on the menu: Mírate.
Lindsay, and the best margarita in recent memory

Our server, Lindsay, was the kind of great that makes you relax on sight. We told her to just pick for us, and she did not miss. One drink arrived pale green and glowing: El Güero, a margarita washed with avocado for a silky, full-fat body, cucumber and jalapeño for cool and heat, a red-veined sorrel leaf floating on top, and a spicy Tajín-style chile-salt rim, all over one big, clear cube. It might be the best margarita either of us has had in a very long time. The other was El Taquero: pineapple, a little smoky-savory lacto chorizo (yes, pork, something we almost never reach for, and made a very happy exception for here), chamomile honey, and a small-batch espadín the bar makes with the Mal Bien family. Every cocktail carries a single mixologist's fingerprint, and the bar program here is genuinely award-winning. You can taste why.
A menu that changes its mind daily

The food runs on the same philosophy: one chef, one point of view, and a menu that rotates by the day. If a dish isn't pulling its weight, it's gone tomorrow, which is exactly why we can't give you the precise names for half of what we ate (and honestly, that's part of the charm). What we do remember: mushroom tacos árabes, smoky and stacked on house-made tortillas; a bright shrimp aguachile with cucumber and grapefruit that was somehow both surprising and completely refreshing; and lamb flautas we happily shared down to the last one. Fresh, local, thoughtful, unfussy.
If you know, you know

Here's the funny part: Mírate isn't new. It's been around about three years, it's beloved, and the reviews are glowing. Plenty of people know exactly what's behind that little door. But plenty don't, and the first time you round that bar and catch sight of the tree, you feel like you've just been let in on something. So consider this us letting you in on it.
If you know, you know. And now, you know.
